Hawley Thomas Chester Jr. ’41

He attended St. Bernard’s School in New York City and graduated from St. George’s School in Newport, R.I., where he later became a trustee and president of the alumni association.

At Princeton, Tommy majored in modern languages, joined Cap and Gown, played freshman soccer and tennis as well as varsity soccer, managed the squash team, and served on the junior prom committee.

Commissioned in the Navy as an ensign in 1943, Tommy served on Alaska patrol before being transferred to the U.S.S. Miller, which was part of the Fast Carrier Task Force in the Pacific and Philippines until April 1945. Separating as a lieutenant senior grade in 1945, he won 11 battle stars and a Naval Unit Commendation.

Tommy first joined Chubb & Son Insurance Co., then moved to Marsh & McLennan before joining Johnson & Higgins, where he became a partner in 1963. He retired in 1981.

Tommy was a member of Greenwich Country Club, Field Club of Greenwich, and Merion Golf Club, among others. He also was active in United Way, Greenwich Hospital, and Greenwich Health Association.

Predeceased by his wife, Helen Cronkhite, he is survived by his daughter, Tracy; his sons, Hawley T. III and Peter; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
