Hawley W. Ward ’48

Body

HAWLEY WERNER WARD died Dec. 29, 1993, in Rochester, N.Y., his lifelong hometown. As he cherished his family, his friends, Rochester, and Canandaigua Lake, so he was cherished in turn by all who knew him for his magic blend of loyalty, his sense of fun, and his buoyant spirit. That spirit saw him through a series of serious illnesses over a period of more than 25 years and kept his appetite sharp for an active outdoor life of sailing, skiing, trout-fishing, and hunting, despite his ailments.

Hawley was active in the lay ministry of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Rochester and hundreds gathered there Jan. 3 for a memorial service. They heard what most already knew of the kindness, gentleness, and strength of his good life.

Hawley prepared for Princeton at St. Paul's, served in the navy during WWII, then joined our class in the fall of 1946. He played j.v. football, wrestled, was on the lacrosse squad, and was a member of Cap and Gown. His brother, Addison W., was member of the Class of 1951 and his father, Frank Hawley was Class of 1896. Until he retired in 1991, Hawley was in sales in the lithographic and packaging businesses.

Hawley is survived by Nora, his adored wife of more than 42 years; son H. Douglas; daughters Lili (Mrs. Richard Hyland) and Lucy (Mrs. R. Macy Harris); sister Elizabeth Adams; and eight grandchildren. The class shares in the loss and offers its sympathy.
