Hayden Nelson Pritchard ’55

Denny, a professor at Lehigh University for 31 years and exceedingly active in civic affairs, died April 30, 2025, at home in Pen Argyl, Pa. After Princeton and service in the Army, he received his master’s degree from Lehigh in 1962 and a Ph.D. from Lehigh in 1964. He co-authored a biology textbook, published nearly two dozen research papers, and won a Lehigh University award for distinguished teaching and advising students in health-related studies.
Denny was born Feb. 13, 1933, in Bangor, Pa., and attended Bangor High School. He was president of the chapter of the National Honor Society, editor of the yearbook, and participated in football, basketball, and track. At Princeton, he majored in biology, joined Dial Lodge and served as its house committee chairman, played IAA touch football, hockey, billiards, and volleyball, and was associate editor of the Bric-a-Brac. His senior-year roommates were Ron Hess, Norman Malone, Hugh Parker, and Ken Sears.
Denny served on the Easton Hospital Board of Trustees from 1977 to 1978; the Bangor Area School District Board from 1975 to 1989, including as was president from 1978 to 1983; the Bangor Public Library trustees from 1990 to 2000; and was co-chairman of the Bangor 125th Celebration in 2000. Also, he was a member of the Bangor Exchange Club since 1970, serving two terms as president, and was chairman of the Youth of the Year program for the State of Pennsylvania since 2000.
Denny is survived by his wife, Kathleen; daughter Robin Ott; son Rodney Heard; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by sons Paul and David.
