Henry Coleman Long ’19

Henry Coleman Long died on July 31,1989, at a nursing home in Selma, Ala., after a long illness. He was born in Uniontown, Ala., and lived there throughout his life. He prepared at Anniston College and Mercersburg Acad¬emy and left Princeton in June 1917 to enlist in the Field Artillery. He was a second lieutenant in the A.E.F.

Coleman was a prominent landowner in Perry and Maren counties; president of H. C. Long Cotton Co. and Long and Paschall Gin; director of Merchant Bank, Cen¬tral Bank, Canebreak Shoe Co., and V.A.B. Library; dea¬con of Uniontown Presbyterian Church; and representa¬tive and delegate to six national conventions.

Coleman Long and Thomas Helm were devoted friends. Mrs. Helm says that one winter they met in Del¬ray Beach, Fla. Coleman and Thomas played golf, while Avery and she enjoyed the beach. One morning after swimming, Mrs. Helm was advised that Mrs. Long had died—the shock from a cold shower had been too much. After a few years, Coleman remarried. They attended two reunions and brought two grandsons along. Coleman was an avid talker and a wonderful storyteller. The class extends its deep sympathy to his widow, two brothers, one sister, one daughter, three grandsons, and two great¬-grandchildren.

The Class of 1919
