Henry Erben Gaillard ’30

Body

HEINIE GAILLARD'S WILL TO LIVE and to participate seemed as unstoppable as Niagara Falls, but on Sept. 18, 1991, we lost our former Class secretary of ten years. He was a dedicated Princeton supporter and also had strong ties to Lawrenceville, where he prepared and developed his swimming talents, which later earned him three Tiger varsity letters. His club was Charter and ro mmates included Snubb Pollard, Pat Maroney, and Fred Lawrence. Heinie's career was spent in insurance, specializing in marine underwriting and claim adjusting with Appleton & Cox, Inc., then Continental Insurance Co., and later Marine Office of America. Three war years were spent in the Navy on destroyers in the Atlantic and Pacific, and he ended with the rank of lieutenant commander. Sailing on the Sound, as a member of the American Yacht Club, was a major hobby, but Heinle also found time to participate in many community programs and had been a trustee of the Leopold Schepp Foundation.

His first wife, Ellen Webster, died in 1965, and in 1967 he married Elizabeth Newland, who survives. Other survivors are his son, Henry Jr.; daughter, Wendy Zawolik; and five grandchildren. We send to them our deep sympathy in the loss of this fine husband, father, and loyal Princetonian.
