Henry Lee Staples III ’41

Body

LEE STAPLES died in his sleep of cancer on Jan. 21, 1990, at the Bethesda Nursing Home in Chevy Chase, where he had lived the last three years. Lee was an honors gradu¬ate of St. Christopher's School in Richmond. At Prince¬ton he majored in public and international affairs and made Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year. Senior year he roomed with Bob Haig. After graduation he worked for a year as a research assistant for Prof. Alpheus Mason and then became an editor for O.S.S. in Washington. He had just completed a book, SECRET INTELLIGENCE IN AFRICA, about his wartime experience involving opera¬tions in Africa, including programs to prevent the Axis from obtaining diamonds and other minerals. The Zydeco Press will publish it in 1990.

In 1945 Lee went to the State Dept., where he served until his retirement in 1977 as head of the European Bureau's Policy Reports Office. At this time his marriage to Isabelle Stuart ended in divorce. Lee remained a loyal Princetonian until the end, keeping in close touch with classmates throughout Washington. We extend our sym¬pathies to his son, Henry; his daughters, Diana and Penelope; his sister, Boone Young; and his three grand¬children.
