Henry Leopold Ughetta ’46

Body

HANK DIED at home in Scarsdale, N.Y., on Dec. 19, 1989, after a long and gallant fight against Alzheimer's disease.

At age 16, Hank came to us from Scarsdale High School. He was one of the youngest members of our Class. He subscribed to that superb ethic, "Work hard all week and play hard all weekend." He picked engineering as his major, but after a year switched to the Woodrow Wilson School. He entered the V-12 program in 1944 and received his degree in 1946.

Entering Columbia Law School, he earned his LL.B. in 1949, the same year he married Mary Alice Andre and joined the firm of Wilkie Farr and Gallagher. He was to spend his whole career there, eventually becoming a senior partner.

Hank was an expert on tax law and lectured on it. He was chairman of the trust and estates section of the N.Y. Bar Assn. and recipient of the Russell Taylor Award from the association for outstanding service. Hank also served as counsel for the Lawn Tennis Assn.

Hank was a member of Scarsdale Volunteer Fire Company III, former president of the Town Club, and the Scarsdale Chamber of Commerce's Citizen of the Year in 1978. He was a director of Scarsdale Family Counseling Service and the United Way, and served as president of the parish council at St. Pius X. Hank served as schools committee chairman of the P.A.A. of Westchester County from 1957 to 1973, and was a former V.P. and secretary of the association. He attended Class luncheons even well into his illness.

Hank's family has waved a banner of supportive love and has set a wonderful example of how to take care of a loved one. To Mary Alice, now V.P. of the Westchester chapter of the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Assn.; and their daughters, Mary, Alice, Nancy, and Anne; their sons, Henry III, Charles, James, John and Richard; may we simply say we grieve for one of our stalwarts and extend our deepest sympathy.
