He prepared at Hotchkiss, where he was on the football and baseball teams and graduated cum laude. Fos received his law degree in 1939 from Columbia. He was in the U.S. Army in WWII for three years with his highest rank being that of major. He served as one of our five Class secretaries during the war years. After three-year stints at Breed, Abbot and Morgan and Armco Steel Co., he spent almost 30 years with J. P. Stevens and Co., the last 15 as general counsel, before retiring in 1976.

Fos was a long-time resident of Wilton, Conn. where he was a community leader. He was proud of being 1976 backgammon champion of the Princeton Club of N.Y. He also enjoyed stamp collecting, boating, and golf.

His memorial service was held Nov. 18, 1989 in the Hotchkiss School Chapel. Fos is survived by his wife, Jane Boone Foster, son Herbert H. III, daughters Grace Watkins, Joanne Stone, Lillian Ketchum, and seven grandchildren.

Here was a man who indeed accomplished many personal goals. He was a natural leader and thoughtful for the welfare of his many friends. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched.
