Chip died of congestive heart failure on Oct. 16, 2023, surrounded by his family at home in Brielle, N.J., where he had lived for the last 28 years.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., he spent his summers in Bay Head, N.J.

He came to us from Choate, where he was a stalwart defensive back on a close-knit and successful soccer team, at the time one of the strongest in the New England prep league. Teammates remember his great smile, wonderful sense of humor, and personal warmth that helped everyone feel welcome.

After receiving his A.B. in psychology from Princeton, Chip began his career of more than 30 years in banking and finance. He was vice president of New Jersey National Bank and remained through several purchases/mergers, serving as vice president of CoreStates Bank and then senior vice president/credit manager for First Union Bank. About a year after yet another merger, he left banking to work with a close friend as vice president of the start-up internet company BATNET and later joined a former banking client as CFO of Anchor Concrete Products, from which he retired. He continued to work part-time, but his cardiac issues had begun to be troublesome.

Chip was an avid golfer and a former member of Pine Barrens Golf Club; friends marveled that he could hit a ball farther with a one-iron than most people can with a driver. He grew up playing tennis and paddle tennis at the Bay Head Yacht Club. He loved photography, visiting his favorite destinations of Maine and Ocean Reef Club, Fla., and spending time with his friends and family.

Chip’s wife of 30 years, Dianne, survives him, as do his daughter, Meredith Flanagan, and her husband, Peter; his son, Peter Talbot, and his wife, Kaarina; two grandchildren, Fiona Flanagan and Finn Talbot, to whom he was “Inky”; two sisters, Nancy Califano and Katie Reilly; nieces and nephews, who called him “Uncle Herbie”; and his children’s mother, Linda Talbot. To all of Chip’s family and friends, we extend our sympathy and share their sense of loss.
