Horace C. Jones II ’38

Horace Jones, who spent most of his life in suburban Philadelphia, died June 8, 2011, in South Dartmouth, Mass.

Horace graduated from The Hill School. At Princeton he majored in politics, achieving second-group honors, was on the golf squad, and served as president of the University orchestra. Freshman and sophomore years he roomed with Sam Logan. Junior year they added W.P. O’Neill, and senior year they added R.A. Moss.

From 1941 to 1946 Horace served in the Army, reaching the rank of major.

After graduation from Princeton, Horace joined Lees & Sons Co. as assistant treasurer, eventually becoming president in 1960. When Lees was purchased by Burlington Industries, he became vice president of Burlington. He retired as CEO of that com-
pany in 1978.

During his career at Burlington, Horace served on the boards of many companies and was involved with many religious, charitable, and civic pursuits. He was a Knight of Malta and a sustaining member of churches in Philadelphia and South Dartmouth.

Horace and his wife, Helen Allen, raised seven children. She died in 2006. He is survived by five children, Spencer ’65, Margaret Connors, Conrad, Ann Cole, and Katherine Stillwell; a sister, Katherine Muckle; 22 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren, to all of whom the class extends condolences.
