Horst D. Kuettner ’62

Body

Horst Kuettner died July 1, 2001, in Floral City, Fla.

He was with us only for freshman year. His sister, Astrid Dunn, said “he was never comfortable with his name.” By our 20th reunion, he had changed his name to Robert Ernest Courtney (the names of his grandfathers); however, he later changed it again, to Kurt Kuttner.

Kurt was born in Königsburg, Germany (now the Russian city of Kaliningrad), in 1940. He came to the United States in November 1947 with his mother and sister. They lived in Daytona Beach, Fla., and he graduated with top honors from the Graham-Eckes School in Palm Beach. Financial problems required him to withdraw from Princeton, but Astrid recalled, “He always loved being there; he always loved Princeton.”

After leaving the University, Kurt joined the U.S. Army. He studied Farsi at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif., and thereafter worked in military intelligence. One of his postings was to South Korea. He left the service on full disability.

For the rest of his life, he lived in the Daytona Beach-Orlando area. The class extends its condolences to Astrid; her husband, Harvey; and their four children.
