Body

MATTY DIED Jan. 9, 1992, near his home in Scotch Plains, NJ., of an apparent heart attack. He came to Princeton from East Orange (NJ.) High School and majored in politics. He won his numerals on the freshman lacrosse team and was a member of Triangle Club and the University band. After graduation, Matty spent a year at Princeton serving as assistant director of student employment.

Upon leaving Princeton, he joined Merck & Co. of Rahway, NJ., and stayed with this pharmaceutical company until joining Sharp & Dohm of Philadelphia in 1940. The two firms merged in 1953, forming Merck, Sharp & Dohm. For eight years Many was V.P. and managing director of the new company's Bermuda and Panama subsidiary, Merck, Sharp & Dohm Intl., Ltd., headquartered in Hamilton, Bermuda. Matty took a position as director of international marketing for Neptune Meter Co. in New York in 1960. He later worked for American Field Services in New York and Foster & Co. in Cedar Knolls, NJ.

During WWII Matty was commissioned to the Naval Reserves and was on active duty from 1943 to 1945. He was discharged as a lieutenant.

In his retirement, Matry served as a board member of United Family and Children's Society of Plainfield, NJ., and was the treasurer of the First Unitarian Society of Plainfield. He had been president of the local chapter of the Memorial Society and V.P. of the American Society in Bermuda.

Since 1985 Matty's major interest had been serving as treasurer of the Class. He usually led all class treasurers in percentage of dues collected.

Matty is survived by his wife, Betty, the former Elizabeth J. McEntee, whom he married in 1937; a daughter Alison; a son Mark; a brother John C.; and a granddaughter. Our hearts go out to them in their time of grief. A memorial service was well attended by his classmates to honor him who did so much for our Class.
