During WWII he served in North Africa and Italy as a fighter pilot. fie was awarded the Air Medal. He was shot down over Germany and spent nine months as a P.O.W.

After working in the textile and publishing fields, he acquired and ran a bindery until his retirement. In 1949 he married Katharine Latimer Finney. They had five children. Baetj enjoyed sports, particularly golf, and in recent years became interested in American paintings. A number of classmates attended memorial services at his church, St. Thomas' in Garrison, Md. He will be remembered for his kind and thoughtful ways with people, for his courage and grace, and for accepting what he could not change.
