Howard F. Casey ’39

Body

Howie died of old age April 7, 2011, surrounded by his family in Concord, N.H.

He was born Feb. 26, 1917, in Dorchester, Mass. He prepared for Princeton at Boston Latin School and Dean Academy, where he excelled in football — as he did at Princeton, where he also played rugby.

While serving in World War II, Howie rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel with the 9th Infantry Division, which saw action in the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, and France. He earned a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and an Oak Leaf Cluster in addition to being awarded the Croix de Guerre  by the French government.

After receiving an M.B.A. from Boston University in 1951, Howie worked for the Veterans Administration, John Darmody and Co., Grace Lines, the Department of Commerce (as a deputy assistant secretary), and the Merchant Marine Academy, from which he retired as acting superintendent.

Howie was married for almost 60 years to Claire Donovan Casey, who died in 2000. He is survived by their children, Howard Jr., Christine Rath, Virginia Casey, and Warren Casey; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. With them and with his wide circle of friends, the class mourns his passing.
