Howard J. Happ *74

Howard Happ, professor emeritus of religious studies at California State University, Northridge, and an Episcopal priest in the Diocese of Los Angeles, died in his sleep March 27, 2011. He was 68.

Happ received a bachelor’s from Cornell in 1964, a master’s from Chicago in 1966, and a bachelor of divinity degree in 1968 from the Princeton Theological Seminary. In 1970, he earned a master’s from Princeton University and in 1974 a Ph.D. in religion from the University. He was appointed to the faculty of California State, Northridge, in 1971, and taught in the religious studies department until retiring in 2005 as professor emeritus.

Ordained a priest in 1974, Happ assisted at St. Nicholas Church in Encino, Calif., for 20 years starting in 1978. In the following years, he assisted at seven other churches. He was the author of numerous theological articles and a chapter in the diocesan centennial history, As We Remember.

Happ had more than 30 godchildren, most of whom are children of former students. He was an honorary member of Princeton’s Class of 1973.
