HOWARD DIED Sept. 9, 1994, in N.Y.C. of heart failure. He was 79. He graduated from Princeton with honors, majoring in French language and literature. He also earned an M.F.A. at Princeton.

After graduating, he served six years on the curatorial staff of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in its dept. of medieval art. In 1944, he became an instructor of art history at Columbia Univ. In 1950 and l 951, he was a Fulbright sr. research fellow in Rome. He became a full professor in 1962, served as art and archeology dept. chairman from 1969- 72, and was named Moor Collegiate Prof. of Art History in 1982. He retired in 1985.

Although Howard published scholarly articles on Bruegel, Giotti, and Bernini, he was best known for his courses on Italian Renaissance and Northern European painting. He got the university's Mark Van Duren Award in 1968, the Great Teacher's Award from the Society of Older Graduates of Columbia in 1970, and an award for distinguished teaching of art history from the College Art Assn. in 1984.

Howard is survived by a daughter, Alison M. To her, the class extends its sympathy.
