Huan Tran, a research physicist, died Dec. 12, 2009, while sleeping. He was 35.

Born in Vietnam, he was brought to the United States when he was 7 months old. Tran graduated as valedictorian of his high school class, and then from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota in 1996. He earned a Ph.D. in physics from Princeton in 2002.

Employed by the University of California, Berkeley, Tran was working in the Sierra Mountains on a microwave telescope doing physics research to understand more about the origin of the universe.

Previously, he had traveled from the deserts of New Mexico to the mountains of Chile in the same quest.

Tran is survived by his parents, Huy and Nhung Tran; three brothers; and two sisters.
