Hubert George Smith Jr. ’33

HUGH SMITH died on june 5, 1989, in Sarasota, Fla., where he had lived since 1978.

Hugh was born on Aug. 12, 1906, in Havana, Cuba, and prepared at Mt. Hermon. At Princeton, he sang in the Chapel Choir and roomed with Lou Reik. After college, Hugh spent four years in Princeton, supervising student workers in the university's dining halls. He then went to Washington, D.C., to work for the Washington Gas Light Co. Ten years later, he moved to Baltimore to work with Consolidated Gas and Electric. He spent 17 years with Consolidated, working mainly on systems and procedures, and then joined the staff of the Maryland State Mental Hospital, where he worked for nine years. Some time after he retired to Sarasota, he wrote: "After 30 years of hobby gardening in the rich Maryland soil, I am now trying to learn, with Agriculture Dept. help, how to do it in sand."

Hugh married Lillie Florence Rose on July 20, 1933, in Princeton. She survives him as do two sons, Jeffrey H. and Peter R. The Class of '33 extends its sympathy to the family.
