Hugh C. L. Stevens III ’44

Body

DR. HUGH STEVENS died Apr. 13, 1993, of heart failure, while taking his morning walk in Waynesville, N.C. In the aftermath of this terrible blow to his widow, Carol, word did not reach us until late January of 1994. 111 health led to Hugh's retirement from practice in 1990. He had shown steady recovery from his physical problems and was planning on attending our 50th.

Hugh joined the class from Wooster Prep in Danbury, Conn. He majored in biology, and roomed with Dick Marsh and Ben Gantt. He was active in the Glee Club and was a member of Charter.

Hugh attended med school at Temple and served in the navy medical corps, principally at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Following study at Georgetown Univ. and the Vater Clinic in Washington, D.C., he began his practice as an internist in 1950 in Nashville, also serving on the teaching staff at Vanderbilt Univ. Hospital. He married Carol in 1952.

Hugh had an abiding love of ice hockey, doctoring Nashville's "Dixie Flyers" and promoting junior hockey. The family moved to Waynesville in 1972, where he continued his private practice while serving on the Haywood County Hospital staff.

Following Hugh's death, Carol moved to Issaquah, Wash. (in the Seattle area), near her daughter, Pamela Freihofer Kvidera. To them, to stepson Charles Freihofer, and to his host of friends, we extend our deepest sympathies.
