Hugh Foster Bell ’41

Body

"CURLEY" BELL DIED April 5, 1991, in Hartford Hospital, after an illness of several months. He and his wife, Anne, lived in North Amherst, where he had taught early American history at the Univ. of Massachusetts.

Born in Boston, Hugh grew up in Ottumwa, Iowa, and returned there to practice law after war service as a Naval Officer in the Atlantic and Pacific and law school at the University of Michigan. Receiving a doctorate in history from Cornell in 1970, he subsequently joined the history department of U.Mass. and enjoyed "moonlighting" in the rare book and map business.

Hugh Bell 'S survived by Anne; sons Harold of Oakland, Hugh Jr. of San Diego, William of Scotland, and Arthur of Boston; and a daughter Rebecca of Williamstown. There are five grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren. We extend our deepest sympathy to all of them.
