Hugo Langdon Bell ’27

BY A LETTER from his son Dale '60, we learned that Hugo died May 13, 1992, on his 86th birthday. Knowing him as they did, his classmates will not be surprised to be told that he was "lucid, compassionate, funny, and testy to the end." Until his retirement in 1976, he was earnestly devoted to an exigent business career, mostly in perfume and cosmetic firms, including Lelin & Fink, Bourjois, and Barbara Gould in New York.

His devotion to business did not keep Hugo from giving much time to University and Class affairs. He served on the Graduate Council, and was a member of the Class of 1927's executive committee. He also organized the 20th and 30th Class reunions, plunged into the Class insurance policy business, and planned rnany of our memorable New York Class dinners.

Hugo headed a collegiate family. His son Hugo L. Jr. attended Middlebury College. Daughter Susan H. went to Hirani College and married Peter Scribner '61. One grandson is an alumnus of Sarah Lawrence College, another of the Rhode Island School of Design, yet another of Boston Univ. Hugo was a marathon traveler and girdled the globe three times, visiting 85 countries on freighter trips to Africa, South America, and the Far East. He was a devoted golfer and football and baseball spectator, and he cherished political and religious independence, Reporting for the Class 60th year record book, he naturally wrote "quite healthy and very happy with the world."
