J. Douglas Carroll *63

Douglas Carroll, who held joint professorships in business and psychology at Rutgers University, died June 7, 2011, at the age of 72.

Carroll graduated from the University of Florida in 1958 with a degree in mathematics and psychology. In 1963, he earned a Ph.D. in psychology from Princeton. He joined Bell Laboratories and, after 25 years, retired in 1989. He was a mathematical and statistical psychologist who specialized in quantitative methods. He pioneered in the development of the important technique of multi-dimensional scaling.

Immediately after retiring from Bell Labs, Carroll was appointed by Rutgers to the board of governors chair in business with a joint appointment in psychology.

He is survived by Sylvia, his wife of 46 years; two sons; and two grandchildren.
