J. Perry Ruddick ’58

Perry Ruddick died comfortably June 15, 2011, at his home in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., after a prolonged illness.

Perry arrived at Princeton from Phillips Exeter Academy, majored in history, and was a member of Charter Club. As members of the varsity tennis team, Perry and Jim Farrin won the Eastern Intercollegiate Doubles Championship in 1956. In 1961 Perry received an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, graduating with distinction. He joined Smith Barney, becoming in 1968 the youngest partner at the time, and through the years was involved in almost all facets of Smith Barney’s business. He retired in 1991 as vice chairman and chief administrative officer.

After retiring, Perry served as president of the Sconset Trust and as a board member of the Nantucket Conservation Foundation and Nantucket Cottage Hospital.

Perry was passionate about golf and was a member of Sankaty Head Golf Club (Nantucket) and Old Marsh Golf Club (Florida). He served as president of Sankaty and was on the Old Marsh advisory board. He played for several years in the Bing Crosby Pro-Am and on the U.S. Seniors Amateur Golf Circuit.

A dedicated classmate, Perry was president of the class (1983-88) and served on numerous class committees.

The class expresses sincerest sympathy to Susan, Perry’s wife of nearly 50 years; children Julie, Pam ’86, and Girard; and seven grandchildren.
