J. William Hubbard ’45

Body

Bill Hubbard died in Charleston, W.Va., his lifelong home, on May 4, 1989, a victim of cancer.

Bill entered Princeton from Lawrenceville and roomed with Bob Westaway and Kirk Ashley. He was a member of Cannon Club, majored in chemical engineer¬ing, and graduated under the accelerated wartime pro¬gram in 1944. Bill served in the Navy as an electronics instructor and then studied law at UVA, from which he received a degree in 1949.

Bill subsequently became a partner in the law firm of Hill, Thomas, Williams and Hubbard, in Charleston, and also was president of Thomas & Hill, Inc., a mortgage-¬banking firm. He also served as the Republican majority leader of Charleston's City Council and as president of the Charleston Humane Society and was an active partic¬ipant in the Chamber of Commerce.

Although Bill was unable to attend many reunions, he and his wife, Gay, participated with enthusiasm in the class mini-reunion that was held in Washington in Apr. 1988. Bill is survived by his widow, the former Gabrielle Parker, and his sister, Elizabeth Hubbard, to whom the class extends its sympathy.
