Jacobo Adrian Varela ’32 *33

Body

Jack Varela, whose father was Uruguay's Minister to the U.S. during our undergraduate days, died May 30, 1997, in his native Montevideo.

After obtaining his degree in civil engineering from Princeton, Jack returned to Uruguay, where he worked for many years in engineering, mainly in refrigeration and air conditioning. During this time he developed a deep interest in psychology and human relations, and this led him into the field of labor relations. After serving as government-appointed mediator in labor disputes, he established a consulting business on industrial relations-the first of this type in Uruguay. Thereafter, he devoted his outstanding career as labor relations consultant to Uruguayan and American firms in South America.

The class extends its sincere condolences to his six surviving children: Jacobo D., Adela Olga, Jose Pedro, Fiorencia, Ximena, and Adrian, and his five grandchildren.
