James Barr Haines ’31

Body

Word came from both Al Walker and Dave Ferguson that Barr Haines died of cardiac arrest on Apr. 29, 1989, while visiting Bermuda. A stalwart member of the class, he was our regional V.P. for Western Pennsylvania and a coordinator of the '31 luncheons in Pittsburgh. He also was involved in the '31 tours abroad.

After earlier connections with the Guaranty Trust Co. of New York and the Union Trust Co. of Pittsburgh, Barr turned to investment counseling and estate planning. In 1970, he co-founded Duquesne Systems, Inc., a bold move at a time when few thought that computer software would be a profitable business. The company recently merged with Morino, Inc., to become Legent Corp., the second-largest publicly held software company in the world. Barr was a director of the New York Venture Fund and V.P. of the Fiduciary Counsel of New York before he retired. He also was president of the Pittsburgh Society of Financial Analysts, an elder and former clerk of ses¬sion of the Sewickley Presbyterian Church, and the com¬modore of Les Cheneaux Yacht Club, in Michigan. Dur¬ing WWII, Barr served in the Air Transport Command as a statistical control officer. He served in all the thea¬ters of action, supervising field officers and planning units. He was a lieutenant colonel at the time of his discharge.

Barr is survived by his widow, Isobel; a daughter, Ann H. Braham; a son, James; four grandchildren; a sister, Claire H. Fairly; and a brother, John K. We extend our sympathy to them in a loss we too deeply feel.
