James Bemis Ward Marshutz ’45

Jim died of cancer on Jan. 12, 1989, in N.Y.C.

Jim entered Princeton from St. Louis Country Day, along with Charlie Allen, Bud Jolley, Bill Love, Lou Ochs, and Spencer Wolling. Jim roomed with Bud in his freshman year, but his career at Old Nassau was short lived. He served with distinction in the Army Air Force in the Pacific as a translator of Japanese and then fin¬ished his education at the Univ. of Missouri's noted School of Journalism, from which he received a degree in 1948. He then joined the Gardner Advertising Agency in St. Louis. Jim moved to N.Y.C. in the 1950s to work at J. Walter Thompson. He later managed Campbell¬-Ewald's office in N.Y.C. and was a senior V.P. of that agency. Later still he moved to Time-Life, Inc., at which he was a senior V.P. in charge of television production.

In 1947, while he was still in Missouri, he married Lucy Katherine Bemis, and they had a daughter, Katherine. He later married Natalie Scott Fenno, and they had a son, Scott. To his survivors—Katherine and Scott, as well as his stepmother, Betty G. Marshutz—the class extends its deep sympathy.
