James Carson Webster ’29 *39

Carson died on Feb. 15, 1989. He prepared for Princeton at the Cedarville School. After our graduation, he spent two summers studying at the Sorbonne and then re¬turned to Princeton to continue his advanced study of art history. He received an M.F.A. in 1933 and a Ph.D. in 1939.

Carson's scholarly career was centered at Northwest¬ern, where he became an instructor in 1934 and a full professor in 1948. He was also a visiting professor at the Univ. of Chicago, the editor of the Art Bulletin, and the book-review editor of the College Art Journal. Among his impressive scholarly publications were Labors of The Months in Antique and Medieval Art, Techniques of Impressionism, and (most recently) Erasmus Palmer: Sculpture and Ideas.

He married Elizabeth Linard in 1935. She survives, as do their son, James Carson Jr. *74, and two sisters, Isabel and Janet Ebster.
