James D. Warfield ’45

Body

JIM WARFIELD DIED June 18, 1994, in Livingston Memorial Hospital, near his ranch on Mill Creek in Pray, Mont. Born in Chicago, Jim entered Princeton from famed New Trier H.S. in Winnetka, Ill. At Princeton, he played freshman and varsity football and freshman and varsity hockey and was a member of Cottage Club. His Princeton career was prematurely terminated by WWII, since he entered the Navy V-12 program and was sent to Northwestern, from which he took his degree in civil engineering. He was commissioned in the Navy and was signed to the 53rd N.C.B. as a combat engineering officer in the Pacific theater.

After his war service, he purchased the Mill Creek Ranch in Montana and operated it (initially with his brother, Bill, until the latter purchased a separate nearby ranch) until his death. Jim married Margery Nickelson, a graduate of Montana State Univ., and was active in local politics and served on many community boards and organizations. His primary lifelong interests were his family and western ranching.

In addition to Margery and his brother Bill, Jim is survived by two other brothers, Lyman W and Richard L; by his twin sister, Hildegarde Leslie; by daughters Laurie Redfield and Sarah Nollmeyer; by son Matt; by four grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews, including William S. Warfield IV '72. To Jim's family, the class extends its sympathy.
