James Earl Eakin ’52

Jim had a 37-year career with Jones & Laughlin Steel (later LTV Corp.) through its transition from rapid growth to razing four of the largest steel plants in the country. He described his life as a “paradox of consistency and change.”

Jim came to Princeton from Butler (Pa.) High School as a student in Navy ROTC. He majored in history, was vice president of Terrace Club, and was manager of the Student Typing Agency. His senior roommate was Sam Pringle. After graduation, Jim spent three years in the Navy on the destroyer U.S.S. Abbott.  

Jim enjoyed a rich life with Mary Beth and their children, Elizabeth, Douglas, and David, sharing interests in music, bridge, and church affairs. Together they worked to improve conditions in their community. His memorial service was held in the Amelia Island Plantation Chapel, where he had served on the governing board.
