Jim died May 5, 2023, in Topsham, Maine. He was 88.

He came to Princeton from Gunnery School, where he played football and hockey, was head prefect, and won an English-Speaking Union scholarship to Brentwood School in England.

At Princeton, Jim sang with the Tigertones for three years, was public information officer in NROTC, and was vice president of Campus Club. His senior-year roommates were Pete Chamberlain, Buzz Peeler, Jake Page, Bon Lombardi, Bruce Bradley, and Dave Leeming.

After graduation, Jim served in the Seventh Fleet in the USNR and was discharged as a lieutenant. He attended graduate school at the University of California at Berkeley (M.A.) and Yale (Ph.D.), after which he taught Chinese history at universities in New York City, Connecticut, and California. In 1979, he was appointed dean of the Sea Education Association in Woods Hole, Mass., holding that position for seven years, then became a fulltime teacher of maritime history, marine policy, and sea literature. His accomplishments are too many to describe here but can be found on the class website.

Jim is survived by his companion of 40 years, Charlotte Pomeroy Hatfield; daughter Jenny Nadine Millinger; sister Susan Pingrey Millinger; and five nieces. The class extends its deepest sympathy to them all.
