James F. Stengel ’26

Body

THE SAD NEWS has reached us only recently, from San Diego, that Jim Stengel died Nov. 8, 1991, following a severe stroke that caused him to be hospitalized for the 13 months prior to his death. Jim prepared for college at Nazareth Hall Military Academy in Nazareth, Penn., and joined us from Moravian College in 1924. He went into teaching right after graduation, spending a number of years in the mathematics department of Georgia Tech. and, later, on the faculty and as dean of education at Linden Hall Seminary for Girls in Linden, Penn.

In later years he moved to California, where he entered the field of industrial relations and served in several wellknown aircraft manufacturing plants, including Marquardt Airplane Corp., and in a Navy steel plant during WWII. He was an avid golfer of tournament quality and won many golfing trophies, in addition to being a highly skilled sports aviator.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Louise Jenkins; and by one son, James F. Stengel II; three daughters, Joanne Johnson, Louise Lamson, and Gayleynne Sutherland; and ten grandchildren; to all of whom the Class extends its sympathy.
