James Forgie Pitcairn ’27

Body

Jim died on May 18, 1989, in his native city, Pittsburgh, where his family was prominent in business. His father, David A. Pitcairn, served for a long time as secretary and assistant treasurer of the famous Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. For some years after graduation, Jim worked for that firm. He then switched to the Mellon National Bank and Trust Co. and worked there the rest of his career. He was well known in local religious and social life as a pillar of the Shadyside Presbyterian Church and as a member of the Pittsburgh Athletic Assn. and the Longue Vue Country Club. Jim was a devoted Republican. It may be said that his life was a worthy example of the contemporary Princetonian business leader.

Jim's first wife, Emily Wittmer Hamilton, whom he married in Pittsburgh in 1934, died in 1938. In 1940, he married Ellen Cook Hicks in Pittsburgh, thus acquiring two stepsons: Lewis W. Hicks III '50 and Harry C. Hicks '50. The latter informed the secretary of Jim's death. To Jim's widow, Ellen, his stepsons, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren we express our sympathy.
