James G. Potter ’28

JIM POJTFR DIED Oct. 21, 1993, at the West Melbourne Health Care Center. He had taught college physics for more than 50 years, Jim graduated from West Lafayette H.S. and studied at Purdue for two years before Princeton. He majored in physics, and did graduate work in physics at N.Y.U. Jim taught at Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago and got his Ph.D. in physics from Yale in 1939.

During the war, he worked for Bell Labs and at the Naval Ordnance Test Station in China Lake, Calif. He was a professor and chairman of the physics department at Texas A. & M. from 195167. From 196787, he was at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, where he set up an introductory physics lab and courses in space sciences.

Jim belonged to the American Assn. of Physics Teachers and was chairman of the American Society for Engineering Education. He was interested in scouting, hospital financing, gardening, and music.

Jim married Dorothy Elizabeth Welch Aug. 15, 1941. He is survived by her; by two sons, Richard and David; and by three grandchildren. He attended our 50th, 55th, and 60th reunions with his wife, The class offers its deep sympathy to Dorothy and their sons.
