James G. Scarff ’22
THE CLASS LOST one of its most dedicated and hard working members Oct. 11, 1992. Jim died peacefully with Iris, Suzy, and Jimmy at his side. He suffered a kidney failure that made him increasingly sleepy but caused him little pain or suffering. Jim had just been reelected Class treasurer. He organized our very successful 70th reunion. Jim Scarff had a warm and lasting devotion to Princeton and the Class of '22, for whom he served as treasurer (1962-75; 198392), and as president (197582). During the 30year period between 1953 and 1982, 20 of the 24 0ff-year Class reunions were held at the Scarffs' house on Hodge Rd. Jim served for many years as a trustee and as secretary of the Class of 1922 Foundation. He was a member of the executive committee of the Natl. Alumni Assn. And the Committee to Nominate Alumni Trustees (chairman 1962), a representative of the Princeton University Fund, and an Annual Giving regional chairman.
Jim was born in Bellefontaine, Ohio, on Nov. 13, 1900, and graduated from Bellefontaine H.S. He began his career as an investment banker, joining National City Bank Company in 1922. He served in WWII as a colonel in the Army Air Force. In 1952 Jim became executive V.P. of E. Leitz, Inc., the U.S. distributor of Leica cameras and Leitz optical equipment. He continued as director of the firm until his 75th birthday. Jim was a member of Nassau Presbyterian Churh, and later of the First Presbyterian Church of Hightstown, the Nassau Club, the Old Guard, and was an honorary lifetime member of the Springdale Golf Club. Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Iris Eberhardt Scarfif, his daughter Suzy Webster, his son James E., and three grandchildren, Vanessa, Alex, and Ben Webster.
