James Gregory Hurley ’44
JIM PASSED away on Oct. 3, 1989 while summering in Canada. He and Joan divided their very active years between Buffalo, their beloved home on the Canadian shore of Lake Erie, and winters in Highland Beach, Fla.
We have lost a truly dedicated, loyal Tiger. Jim loved Princeton and everything connected with it. In one of his '70s dues notes he wrote, "who would have believed way back in Sept. 1940 that Joan and I would have two daughters at Princeton, Mary '75 and Kathy '77!"
Jim majored in politics, graduating cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1944. He entered Harvard Law after two years in the Army Air Corps, graduating in 1948. He spent his entire legal career with the Buffalo firm of Albrecht, Maguire, Heffern & Gregg, where he specialized in corporate law. Jim was generous to a fault with the time he devoted to charitable, cultural and religious activities in western New York. Throughout his life he was deeply involved in Catholic lay affairs in that region. He served as a director and trustee of two local colleges and three secondary schools. His club affiliations were too numerous to list here. The Princeton and Harvard Clubs of Western New York were among his favorites, along with the Cherry Hill Country Club, Buffalo and Mid-Day Clubs. His extensive obit in the Buffalo paper reflects the city's admiration for the man.
To Joan, his daughters Mary H. Begley, Kathleen Ann, and Alice, and his son James, the Class extends its deepest sympathies. God bless him.
