James Guy Pittenger ’43

JIM PASSED AWAY in Detroit May 17, 1991, following a long battle against Parkinson's disease and cancer. He was 69.

He prepped at Kiski before entering Princeton, and completed his degree in chemical engineering within three years. Jim was a member of Tower Club.

After graduation, he traveled for 10 years in France and North America, managing the construction of steel plants for Koppers. During that period, Jim married Pauline Jennings, who made each stop on the journey into a warm and comfortable home, in 1954, they moved one final time to Dearborn, Mich., where Jim joined the Rouge Steel division of Ford. He eventually rose to the rank of general manufacturing manager, retiring in 1979 as his health began to deteriorate,

Jim and his family's association with Princeton was a source of great pride throughout his life. Emulating the example set by him and his brother John '40, daughter Eulaine Deist graduated with the first fouryear coed class in 1973, followed by her younger brother John in 1978. Oldest daughter Pauline predated coeducation, thus precluding the possibility of a perfect 1.000 Pittenger family batting average. .Jim was also a member of the Princeton Schools Committee.

Jim is survived by his wife, Pauline; daughters, Pauline Zapp and Eulaine Deist '73; son, John '78; brother, John '40; and four grandchildren. To all of them, we extend our most heartfelt condolences.
