James J. Harley Jr. ’58

Body

Our Classmate Jim Harley passed away on Nov. 19, 1988. Jim was performing in the role of Major General Stanley in the finale of The Pirates of Penzance when he was stricken with a heart attack. He died at a local hospital the next day.

At Princeton, Jim majored in architecture and be¬longed to Dial Lodge. After graduation, he spent three years in the Air Force and then did graduate work in architecture at Penn. Jim taught architecture at the Univ. of Kansas, Bowdoin College, and elsewhere until 1973, when he and his wife Holly moved to Maine and founded the firm of Maineform Architecture. Though his profession was architecture, Jim's lifelong love was the performance of vocal music. At Princeton, he was a member of the Chapel Choir and the Glee Club, and in Maine, he was a soloist with the Oratorio Chorale and a member of the Renaissance Singers. At the time of his death, Jim was making his seventh stage appearance with the Brunswick Chorale Society.

Besides his widow Holly, Jim is survived by three sons, Stephen, Andrew, and Jamie. Another son, Stewart, died in 1987. Jim was always very proud of his connections with Princeton. He attended our 25th reunion with Holly and Jamie, and he and Jamie attended our 30th last year. According to Holly, those were two of the great events of his life. To Holly, Jim's surviving children, and his parents the class extends its sincerest sympathy.
