James L. Crane III ’65
JIM DIED June 4, 1994, of a heart attack. He was born in Buffalo and prepared at St. Paul's School. At Princeton, Jim majored in English and wrote his thesis on Thomas Hardy. He was a member of Colonial Club and played freshman, Palmer Square, and j.v. hockey. After graduation, Jim caught English at Athens College in Greece on a fellowship. He then returned and went to the Univ. of Michigan, where he was an editor of the law review and graduated with honors.
Jim joined the New York firm of Hughes Hubbard & Reed, spending his entire career there. He became a partner in 1977. He specialized in corporate and securities law.
Jim had a penchant for travel, especially to places off the beaten track. His daughter, Melissa '98, experienced that during a month-long business trip to Vietnam this spring. So did his friend and classmate Rick Betts, who accompanied him across North Africa on a motorcycle in 1969, and across West Africa to Timbuktu in 1973.
The class extends its deepest sympathies to Jim's widow, Cathy; his daughters, Melissa and Tracy; his father, James L. Jr. '35; his mother, Joan; and his two brothers.
