James Leonard Highsaw Jr. ’35

JIM WAS born in Memphis, Tenn., on Jan. 6, 1914. He died in Chevy Chase, Md., on July 9, 1992, of a heart ailment.

Graduating from Memphis Technical H.S., Jim went to Southwestern Presbyterian Univ. for his freshman year. He then transferred to Princeton, entering as a sophomore. He roomed with Bill Logan in Pyne Hall. His major was politics, in which he won first group honors. He was admitted to Phi Beta Kappa and became the valedictorian of 1935. Among other activities he was president of the Cliosophic Society.

Jim went on to Harvard Law School , after which he entered government service as, among other things, chief of litigation of the Civil Aeronautics Board. He assisted in the organization of the International Civil Aviation Organization.

In 1955 Jim went into private practice with Muholland, Robie and Hickey. Fifteen years later he formed the firm of Highsaw, Mahoney & Clarke, which specialized in labor law, transportation law, and civil rights cases.

Jim was an inveterate traveler. He and his wife, Jane, went to Europe, Russia, Singapore, and Australia among other places.

Jim is survived by his widow, Jane; his three children, Rhoda, James III, and Carol *88; two grandchildren; and his brother, Bob '39. Bob reports always "he was always fond of Princeton ... a loving family man and a darned good brother." The Class of 1935 extends its deep sympathy to Jane and her family.

The Class of 1935
