James Palmer Whitlock ’38

Body

JIM WHITLOCK died at his home in Hillside, N.J., on Feb. 15, 1990, after a year-and-a-half-long bout with cancer. Jim lived in the Elizabeth, N.J., area all his life and married Barbara Smith there in 1941.

Jim came to Princeton from Loomis and roomed all four years with Cliff Baker. He was a member of Cap and Gown and devoted most of his time and energies at Princeton to the PRINCETONlAN, becoming advertising manager his senior year. After graduation and a brief stint in the advertising business in New York, Jim joined the U.S.N.R. in the Intelligence Branch during WWII and attained the rank of lt. commander. After the war, Jim became associated with his family business, Whitlock Cordage Co., and later with Jones & Laughlin in that company's steel drum division, from which he retired.

In retirement Jim enjoyed a number of hobbies, and a few years ago he became engrossed in a study of the Scriptures based not on the work of others, but on his own concentrated reading of them. As a result of his deep interest and study, he authored a book that is in the final stages of editing and will soon be published.

Jim is survived by his widow, Barbara; four children, James P. Jr.'64, David F., Nancy A., and Chester A; a brother, Luke Whitlock '33; a sister, Marilyn W. Bradley; and five grandchildren. To all of them the Class extends its deepest sympathy.
