James Shand Jr. ’74

Body

Our classmate James Shand succumbed to a long illness Nov. 17, 2009.

All who knew “Shad Roe” will never forget his infectious laugh, his love of friends and good times, and his enthusiasm for hockey, golf, bridge, bowling, sports trivia, crossword puzzles, and “Oh Hell.”

Jim graduated from Exeter in 1970. At Princeton, he majored in political science and joined Cap and Gown Club and the rifle team. He worked for Bay Banks Boston from 1975 until he returned to Lancaster, Pa., in 1985 to run the family business, Watt & Shand. Later he helped found Sageworth Trust Co., a private family-trust firm, and recently purchased the Demuth Tobacco Shop, the country’s oldest tobacco store.

A letter of condolence from Shad’s freshman-year roommate, Keith Stock, properly exhorts all of us to “carry forward Jim’s incredibly positive work, passion, and character in whatever way [we] can.” We will miss Shad Roe.

The class extends condolences to his wife, Zemma; his daughter, Lee; and his brother and sister-in-law, Douglas and Susanne, and their six children.
