James William Simpson ’29

JIM LIVED in Wichita, but died July 17, 1992, while visiting his son in Flintridge, Calif. He prepared for college at Arnold and Lawrenceville. At Princeton he belonged to the banjo club, Triangle Club, and band. He was in Cannon and his roommates were Laurie Semans and Newton Chapin '31. His senior thesis was on oil exploration and led to his being hired as a land man and oil scout by Philliips Petroleum. In 1936, he joined with his fatherin-law to form the EwersSimpson Oil Corp. He was in the lighterthanair service of the Navy during WWII, advancing to lieutenant commander. He continued in the oil-leasing business after the war, and also was a director of MidKansas Savings & Loan. Throughout his life he was a devotee of jazz, playing saxophone and clarinet. In 1933 he married Emilie Ewers, who is now deceased. Their only son is Herman E. The Class extends sincere sympathy to him.
