James A. Woodwell ’62

Woody died Sept. 18, 2003, in the Pacific Northwest.

He came to Princeton from Wappingers School. Woody roomed with Tom Corwin, John Isacs, and John Roberts. He played 150-pound football. A highly creative individual, he majored in architecture. He made original and clever designs for friends’ beer jackets that depicted the “tiger” in unique positions.

Woody married Jean Barach senior year. They divorced after having four children. Woody did not graduate with our class because proctor Axel found his illegal car in Lake Carnegie senior year. Following Princeton he earned a degree from the Willamette University Graduate School of Administration.

After living in metropolitan New York City for a decade, Woody and his family moved to Salem, Ore., finding it to be God’s country with clean air, beautiful mountains, and friendly people. He worked in both public and private-sector land development during his successful career.

Woody struggled with addictions for much of his life, finally overcoming them — only to be severely crippled by arthritis in his later years and forced onto disability. His friends remember him as a kind, lovable person who overcame his demons.

The class extends sympathy to his family.
