Jan B. Vlcek ’65

Body

Jan Vlcek died Apr. 13, 1994, in Chevy Chase, Md., after a two-year battle with brain cancer. As genuinely warm and cheerful as he was capable, Jan had a notable legal career in Washington, in private practice, in public service, and in helping to formulate government energy policy. He served on the campaign committees and transition teams of Presidents Reagan and Bush and chaired the Natl. Energy Resources Organization.

Jan was raised in Savannah and was a varsity athlete, school newspaper editor, and state debating finalist before coming to Princeton, where he ran cross-country and continued his speaking through Whig-Clio, while majoring in history. After law school at Penn, he served in army intelligence, then joined the E.P.A. in its formative days.

In 1973, Jan switched to Capitol Hill, where he became involved in the field he was to focus on for the rest of his career, energy policy. It was also then that he married Ann Lewis, who survives him, along with their daughters, Elizabeth and Katharine. Jan is also survived by his mother, Alice, and three brothers. To them all we extend our sincerest condolences. Jan did a great deal with the time allotted to him and left many fond memories. It is all our loss that he wasn't allowed to give more.
