Jerome Christian Muys ’54

Body

Jerome C. Muys of Bethesda, Md., died Dec. 12, 2009.

Born in New York City, he grew up in East Stroudsburg, Pa., and Phillipsburg, N.J. At Princeton, he majored in history and graduated magna cum laude. He graduated from Stanford Law School, where he served on its law review.

His career included working as California deputy attorney general in the Colorado River litigation division and later as special counsel to California in the litigation for Ely, McCarty & Duncan.

In 1966, Jerry served as assistant general counsel for the Public Land Law Review Commission, drafting its final report governing the management of 700 million acres of federal land. Jerry also taught water law and international law of the sea at George Washington and UVA law schools. He served in various capacities at Bethesda United Methodist Church and was president for the Stanford and Princeton clubs of Washington.

Jerry once said, “The education I received and the professors, coaches, and friends who touched my life made it a very privileged one, and I have tried hard to bring Princeton’s ideals to my family, church, community, and professional life.”

He is survived by Barbara, his wife of 56 years; their children, Jerry Jr., Brian, and Laurie; and five grandchildren. The class extends its condolences to them.
