Jerry was born Oct. 21, 1927, to Jerome L. and Helen Shadburne McHugh in St. Louis, Mo.

He prepared at Pembroke Country Day in Kansas City and attended the University of Missouri for a year prior to two years of service in the Army Medical Corps. At Princeton he majored in geology, belonged to Ivy, and played rugby. He roomed with Harold Hobart, Paul Ingersoll, George Matthiessen, B.M. Murray, and Paul van Dyke.

Jerry and Anabel Carey were married in 1956. Over the years he maintained friendships with his fellow geology majors, including Worth Rock ’51, who was a member of the Vedanta Society (Ramakrishna Order) in Trabuco Canyon, Calif.

Jerry was a successful independent oil and gas producer. He and Anabel were major supporters of Colorado College in Colorado Springs, endowing a chair in American Institutions and Leadership in the political science department and underwriting the Baca Campus in Crestone, designed for field study, retreats, and conferences. He was elected a charter trustee in 1980 and chaired the college buildings and grounds committee.

Jerry died April 5, 2016, in Denver. He is survived by Anabel and their children, Jerome Jr., Erin Gogolak, June Gould, Burke, and Christopher ’91 and their families.
