Joey Leigh McCandless ’51 *52
Jake majored in psychology, belonged to Tiger Inn, and roomed with Frank Benenati, Dick Simmons, and Dick Valentzas. He was a member of the undefeated 1950 Princeton football team that won the Lambert Trophy.
After a year in grad school, Jake coached and taught at St. Mark’s and Kent. Returning to Princeton to coach football in 1958, he became head coach in 1969. He replaced the single-wing formation with the T-formation that year and won a share of the Ivy League title. He was also head basketball coach from 1962 to 1963.
Turning to banking from 1973 to 1983, Jake was a vice president at Manufacturers Hanover Trust, thereafter becoming senior vice president of The Trust Company of the West. He retired in 1994.
In 1951 Jake and Mary “Bunny” Bradshaw married. They later became the parents of Linda, Peter, and Susan. Bunny died in 1987.
Jake died Nov. 5, 2007, at home in Ocala, Fla., after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; his three children; five grandchildren; and his brother, Bill McCandless ’56. We join them in mourning the passing of a great Princetonian and one of our own.
