John B. Merrell ’46

Jack died Feb. 7, 2010. He had lived in Short Hills, N.J., and Stamford, Conn., for many years.

Jack came to Princeton from Scotch Plains, N.J., and enrolled as a premed major and joined the Army Reserve. He was called to active duty the following year and became a medic in the 83rd Infantry Division in Europe. He was wounded twice and awarded the Silver Battle Star.

He returned to Princeton in the fall of 1945 as an economics major, graduated in 1949, and went on to earn an M.B.A. at Penn’s Wharton School. For the next five years he worked at Prudential Life and McKinsey & Co., the management-consulting firm, and then spent 29 years at Mobil Oil Corp., where he became general manager, treasurer, and eventually head of Mobil’s newly formed credit-card department. He retired in 1988, but remained active in business as an investor and/or director of several companies.

Jack was active in Princeton affairs, golf and tennis, and was addicted to travel. He is survived by his wife, the stage and TV actress Rosemary Rice; and their children, Marcia Merrell Schonborn and John. The class extends deepest sympathy to them all.
