John Baker Schaner ’35

JOHN SCHANER died Nov. 27, 1992, at Hershey Medical Center, Penn. He was 79 and had been ill for a number of years. His primary health problem was hypoglycemia.

Most of his life, John was a lawyer in the Lewistown area, and for 12 years he had been the Mifflin County public defender. A member of the Pennsylvania Bar Assn. and a life member of the Elks, he also was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Lewistown, where he taught Sunday school. He was a veteran of WWII, serving from 1942 to 1946 with the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force in the weather forecasting services.

John's law degree was from Harvard Law School. At Princeton, he was Phi Beta Kappa and graduated with honors from the politics department. He was an intensive reader, a member of the library board, and spent countless hours in the library, going through its three different locations in Lewistown. John had an upbringing that was replete with family values, and he kept these values foremost throughout his life. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, the former Edna Mae Buckwaiter, and a sister, Eleanor Schaner Bennett, to whom the Class expresses its sincere sympathy.
